Important historical figures:
Two important figures are King Kamehameha I (1758–1819), who unified the islands through conquest, and Kamehameha III (1813–1854), who transformed Hawaii into a constitutional monarchy. Two missionaries who helped shape Hawaiian life and politics were Hiram Bingham (1789–1869) and Gerrit Parmele Judd (1803–1873). Sanford B. Dole (1844–1926) and Lorrin Andrews Thurston (1858–1931) were leaders of the revolutionary movement that overthrew Queen Liliuokalani (1838–1917). They established a republic, and helped make Hawaii an annex of the United States. Dole was the republic's first president and the territory's first governor.
