The islands of Hawaii, like many other islands, were formed by under sea volcanoes. The biggest volcano in Hawaii is 4km tall and its name is Mauna Loa. Hawaii is actually a chain of 132 islands, each of
which is the top of a submerged volcanic mountain, that can be divided into
three land groups. The first group consists of eight main islands which are the islands we usually think
of when we think of Hawaii. All of the main islands, with the exception Kahoolawe, are inhabited. Part of the coastline has tall cliffs rising straight up from the edge of the water. In some places, large rocks of lava stand out from the water along the shore. Most of the beaches on the islands have beautiful white sand, but some are covered with black sand, formed when molten lava met the ocean.Hawaii has only two seasons – summer, from May to October, and winter, from November to April.
Climates you may encounter in the Hawaiian Islands include: a.the humid tropical zones - from sea level to 450 feet b.the arid and semi-arid zones - the warmest parts of the islands c.the temperate zones, at certain locations above 1,300 to 1,650 feet d.the Alpine zones, cold areas above 10,500 feet
